About the FarmDigital Program

Entrepreneurs active in the agricultural sector spend more and more of their time registering and publishing all kinds of data, as the government, certification bodies, banks, clients, the retail sector and consumers all want to have more insight into how safe and sustainable their food is.

The majority of this agriculture-related data is still paper-based, spread over different systems and difficult to exchange between the people who want to access it. This is why digitising agricultural business data is an important item on the agenda. With FarmDigital, we can respond to these developments.

FarmDigital is an action research programme which is currently working towards a situation in which data only needs to be entered once and can be shared easily. It aims to achieve this goal by standardising data and developing and implementing an independent, digital platform for people to use.

Huge time savings in the certification of table grapes made possible by digitisation

In South Africa, the certification process for table grapes is mapped out very precisely within FarmDigital, and this has demonstrated that great time savings can be achieved through digitisation. Robbert Robbemond is one of the researchers who has worked on this in-depth study. He summarises the outcomes for us.

The end is near

2016 comes to an end, with major events like the Brexit-vote and the American election it has been an exciting year. It also brings the Farm Digital project to a close. It is attractive to sum up all the achievements of the project, but let me concentrate on some of the insights that I as a researcher (and my colleagues) learned about. More can be found in all the deliverables that are available on this website.

Foreign affairs

As the FarmDigital project enters its last quarter, we realise that by Christmas the project is finished. Many deliverables are now available on this web site, others are in their final phase. We have recently also been able to link our FarmDigital experience to European discussions.

FarmDigital taught us a lot on business models, and all the options that a platform has to design its business model. A business model describes the rationale of how an organisation creates, delivers, and captures value in economic, social, cultural or other contexts. In the end it also determines whom to send the invoice for all the costs that are made.
